As far as protecting your apple from bruising, this item is as well-designed as a bullet-proof vest with a hole where your heart is.
That’s weird… I’ve used a similar pattern to crochet a holder for my coffee mugs so they don’t feel so hot to the touch… Not sure I’d put it on produce though.
